Biennial Convention - STTI President's Call to Action - 20th November 2013

Submitted by Caroline Williams

Caroline, Hester and Lesley at the Biennial ConventionHester Klopper from South Africa formally took over Presidency of STTI this afternoon. Her Call to Action, which will inform the next two years of work within STTI, is based on the theme "Serve Locally, Transform Regionally, Lead Globally". The Call to Action involves Servant Leadership, Connectedness, Transformation and Gratitude.

  • Servant Leadership is demonstrated by selfless service, compassion and having a heart. Key to servant leadership is a commitment to the development of others.
  • Connectedness provides a sense of belonging, and is a sense of being a part of something larger than oneself. Embedded within it is collaboration and networking.
  • Transformation is the change in nature and character to respond to globalisation and rapid advances in technology. It includes the principles of member-centred services with local relevance and regional application. It also has a goal of local relevance and equal access to all services and products for all members.
  • As part of Gratitude she suggests we use STTI Founders' Day (October 5th) to each give 90minutes of service. This should be something different to our usual work.

At the end of her Call to Action Lesley and I had the opportunity of a few words with Hester, and we also got a photograph!

Lesley Moore and Caroline Williams are currently in Indianapolis, USA, attending the 42nd Biennial Convention. As well as a full scholarly programme there are special sessions for Chapter Leaders, meetings for each Chapter and regional meetings for the 5 Chapters that make up the European Region. The convention ends with 2 half days of elections, where members of STTI are elected to the International board of directors, and various committees. There are also some changes to the by-laws that are being discussed and voted upon. While we have been out here we have had the great pleasure to meet up with Michelle Lilly and Sabrina Collins-Christie. Two wonderful women who provide the essential support to ensure that we can function effectively in our Chapter. And here is a little photo of the four of us!
